Today during our Monday morning meditation, we explored sitting with difficult emotions. I don’t often like to say negative or positive when talking about an emotion since all our emotions are there for a reason and want to tell us something,
In a world that prizes positivity and happiness, difficult emotions often get sidelined. We're encouraged to "stay strong," "be positive," and "keep moving forward." While these messages are well-intentioned, they can leave us ill-equipped to handle the inevitable waves of sadness, anger, fear, or frustration. Instead of running from these emotions, what if we sat with them? Embracing difficult emotions can be a transformative practice that fosters self-awareness, resilience, and personal growth.
Why Avoiding Difficult Emotions Doesn't Work
When we suppress or ignore our difficult emotions, they don’t disappear. Instead, they manifest in other ways—physical tension, emotional outbursts, or even long-term mental health issues. By avoiding these feelings, we deny ourselves the opportunity to understand their root causes and the lessons they might offer.
The Benefits of Sitting with Difficult Emotions
Increased Emotional Intelligence: Taking the time to acknowledge and name what you're feeling builds emotional awareness. This practice helps you identify triggers and patterns in your emotional responses.
Better Decision-Making: Emotions, even the difficult ones, carry valuable information. Sitting with them can provide clarity, helping you make decisions that align with your values and long-term goals.
Resilience: Facing discomfort strengthens your ability to cope with future challenges. It’s like building a muscle—the more you practice, the stronger you become.
Deeper Connections: Understanding your own emotions enhances empathy and communication, which can lead to more authentic relationships.
How to Sit with Difficult Emotions
Create a Safe Space: Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. This could be a cozy corner of your home, a bench at a park, or even your car.
Name the Emotion: Identify what you’re feeling. Is it anger? Sadness? Anxiety? Giving a name to the emotion can reduce its intensity and make it more manageable. Simply say: This is Grief. This is Anger. Naming it can help separate yourself from the emotion.
Observe Without Judgment: Avoid labeling the emotion as "good" or "bad." Simply notice how it feels in your body and mind. Where does it manifest? Is it a tightness in your chest or a knot in your stomach?
Breathe Through It: Focus on your breath. Deep, intentional breathing can help you stay grounded and present.
Journal Your Thoughts: Writing down your feelings can provide additional clarity and a sense of release. It’s a way to give form to the formless.
Seek Support When Needed: If sitting with certain emotions feels overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist, counselor, or trusted friend. Sometimes, we need help unpacking what’s inside.
Turning Pain into Purpose
Difficult emotions are often seen as obstacles, but they can also be powerful teachers. Anger might highlight a boundary that’s been crossed. Sadness could signal the need to let go of something that no longer serves you. Fear might challenge you to step outside your comfort zone.
By sitting with these emotions, you’re not just surviving them; you’re learning from them. In the process, you become more self-aware, compassionate, and grounded.
Embracing the Full Spectrum of Life
Life is a blend of light and shadow, joy and sorrow. By embracing the full spectrum of your emotions, you allow yourself to live more authentically. Sitting with difficult emotions is not a sign of weakness but an act of courage and self-love. It’s a reminder that every part of your emotional landscape deserves attention and care.
The next time a wave of difficulty washes over you, resist the urge to push it away. Instead, sit with it. Listen to it. Learn from it. In doing so, you may find that even your darkest moments hold the seeds of growth and transformation.
With so much love,
❤️ Claire
